Miniaci Performing Arts Center, the Broward Center for the Performing
Arts, and Nova Southeastern University
A Partnership
We have recently
formed a partnership and are exploring collaborative projects between
the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA), and NSU. One of the
primary goals of the IAP is to provide artistic, technical, educational,
and other support services for the Miniaci Performing Arts Center (MPAC).
Because the new facility has no formal programming in place, it presents
an extraordinary opportunity to establish from the outset a synthesis
between the various arts programs as they emerge. Traditionally, arts
organizations and universities find this task very daunting because
the various components of the arts are often segmented into territorial
and competitive “institutions-within-an-institution.” Unlike
the corporate world, where one division of a business must often subsidize
another in order to achieve overall fiscal stability, the various arts
disciplines are forced to survive independently, either unwilling or
unable to share resources. With the ability to tap into the immense
infrastructure of the BCPA, as well as utilizing a layer of executive
administration from the Center, MPAC will not have to “reinvent
the wheel” in order to accomplish a myriad of arts-related administrative
and marketing tasks. In turn, the BCPA attains access to NSU’s
educational infrastructure for a wide array of educational and arts
activities.
Of great interest to IAP students will be the opportunity to take part
in Master Classes, intern and extern-ships, and other collaborative
efforts with world class artists, performers, technicians, choreographers,
and designers, among many others who perform at the BCPA during the
year. It is an opportunity that a university community simply could
not have access to without the BCPA partnership.
The I.A. Program will be intrinsically involved in this overall collaboration
by establishing a mutually beneficial production arrangement. In order
to provide an optimal educational experience, the IAP will need access
to the theatrical amenities and technical components of both facilities.
Students will be given the opportunity to operate, direct, produce,
and maintain all facets of the MPAC on an advanced level, as well as
working with BCPA’s professional staff. They will serve as artistic
and technical assistants for the various projects undertaken in the
MPAC, and as interns at the BCPA.
